Former President Jimmy Carter is facing a $5 million class action lawsuit over his 2006 book “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid.” Five readers allege the book contains anti-Israel propaganda and is intended to deceive the public instead of presenting objective and accurate information.
The publisher Simon & Schuster has also been named a party to the lawsuit. The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and officially charges Carter and the publishing company of breach of contract, unjust enrichment and deceit.
Simon & Schuster calls the lawsuit “frivolous” and plans to defend it. Whether the lawsuit has merit or is simply an attack on free speech will be determined as the case unfolds.
