Warrens Jeffs was extradited on Utah to Texas earlier this week. Jeffs is being held without bail and is waiting to be tried on two charges of sexual assault of a child and bigamy. Jeffs has been in the media several times over the last decade for his role as the prophet of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS). Critics of FLDS say the religion forces young girls into marriages with older men, leading to sexual abuse and exploitation. Members of the religion deny these allegations and say that marriages are consensual and non exploitative. Church members also allege that the legal system is simply punishing Jeffs because he is the leader of an unpopular religion.
Although Jeffs has had other charges against him in other states, at least one state, Arizona, dismissed those charges stating that Texas has more serious charges against him. If convicted in Texas, Jeffs can face up to 99 years in prison.
