A Judge in California refused to keep the $10 million figure a secret, as all parties requested in this case. Toyota was named the Defendant in a lawsuit filed by family members of four people who were killed in a runaway Lexus crash last year. The accident prompted the recall of more than 8 million Toyota vehicles worldwide.
The victim’s relatives alleged that defects in the vehicle were the cause of the accident. The defects led the car to speed out of control to approximately 190 kilometers per hour before it lost control and struck another vehicle. Experts and investigators have different opinions on the exact defects. Some believe wrong sized floor mats trapped the accelerator causing the fatal accident, while others insist the car was equipped with a faulty electronic system.
Even though Toyota has agreed to pay $10 million, the company has neither admitted nor denied liability in the matter. Regardless, the news about the settlement will likely prompt much more litigation regarding the defective cars. Families of victims who were contemplating a lawsuit will probably feel hopeful after learning about the settlement and decide to file.
